The Canon RF 28-70 f2.0 L USM literally has no rivals in the lens world!
Big, heavy and unashamedly special!
Many say this lens is the only zoom lens ever made that will literally replace a set of prime lenses. Indeed many top class well respected wedding photographers have done exactly that!
Ranging from 28mm and zooming to 70mm at a constant f2.0 this lens does indeed cover the classic 28(24’ish), 35mm and 50mm and is close to the 85mm range (more on that). The clarity of the images that come from this monster is simply superb.
70mm is indeed close to 85mm and in days gone by a sharp 70mm f2 would indeed almost match an 85mm which would need to be stopped down to get acceptable sharpness, however the introduction of the RF85mm f1.2 has changed the playing field as you no longer need to stop down so the extra focal length and MUCH wider aperture make the 85mm f1.2 images very different.
Back to the RF28-70mm, big and heavy! most certainly YES! but strangely well balanced so actually feels quite similar to my old Canon 5D’s with a EF 24-70mm f2.8 mounted.
This lens is not without its downsides! its is 1430g in weight! that’s a lot! also the end lens is 95mm wide making filters expensive! but most of all it makes it hard to fit in your camera bag!
A few years back when the industry started to become mirrorless, one of the big selling points was the reduced size and weight that could be achieved by removing the traditional mirror… not quite sure what happened but i will say one thing is lens would have never been possible had we still been using dSLR’s, in my book that’s a good thing!
Is it in my bag? oh yes! mounted on the R5 and paired with an R7 with the RF 70-200mm f2.8 they are a formidable couple.
